Box CC Player / Member profiles No.35 – The final word

Firstly, on behalf of myself and Stephen Hall, a huge thank you to all those that contributed to the player profiles and memories which started way back in April/May 2020. We’ve had to pester a lot of people over the last 12 months for stories, favourite moments, bizarre moments (there’s certainly been a lot of them!) etc. At the heart of every profile received, the obvious factors within each one is the enjoyment of playing for Box and the joy that team mates can bring - Daffy

A closing message from our Chairman – Gerald Hayward (Chairman)
So, our 151st Anniversary season is well under way (rain permitting!)
Obviously, the last year or so has seen unfathomable changes to the world and our lives due to the pandemic.
We were very lucky to have been able to play some cricket last summer and it looks like we will be able to enjoy a full season for 2021.
This season will of course include our 151st Anniversary cricket week which should be lots of fun in the first full week of July with cricket on the Rec every day.
During the first lockdown our esteemed treasurer Stephen had the great idea of publishing members profiles where great memories and stories of members past and present have been shared.
The publishing of the stories was taken on by Daffy. Thanks to Stephen and Daffy for their editorial and publishing duties.
The profiles have provided fantastic entertainment with reminiscences covering some 60 years at least and a massive thanks to all those who took the time to pen their stories and memories.
We also shared our memories of much missed club members and friends who are no longer with us.
I know for me, reading the profiles on a Friday morning provided a well needed tonic during lockdown with many a chuckle to myself when reading them.
I provided the first profile, which was not of the high standard of those that followed, and I am so sorry to my friends and team mates I neglected to mention, I owe some drinks to a quite a few of you!!
We were taken through time from the 50s right to the present day with a recurring theme that cricket and indeed sport in general provides us with unforgettable moments and lifelong friendships.
I am lucky enough to have played for this club for some 40 years now, (I know I don’t look old enough!!) and have played with what must be hundreds of players in that time from the early 80s to our present team and although have said “I’m never playing again” many times, I have enjoyed every minute of it.
I am very proud also to be Acting Chairman of the Club and am l very optimistic for the future of the club.
We have a young and enthusiastic captaincy team and a great spirit and togetherness in the current squad of players. I am very hopeful that we can again field a 2nd team in the near future.
I am very much looking forward to the season and the cricket week and would ask all members to publicise this and hopefully we can see the ground busy during all the games in that week.
Thanks to Daffy and his sub-committee for all the hard work they are putting in towards the cricket week.
To all, enjoy the upcoming easings of restrictions, stay safe and enjoy your cricket.
Cheers
Jag
